A distributor’s professional opinion, informed by formulation, practical trials and hobbyist feedback

My conclusion: DRP remains a good fish food, but Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food now offers the stronger overall package: broader functional nutrition, more specialised formulas, excellent digestibility, thoughtful pellet design and greater support for long-term condition—not simply rapid growth.

The question I could no longer avoid

Many clients have asked me the same question: which food is better—Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food or DRP Fish Food? For a long time, I avoided giving a direct answer. DRP was the food I personally rated among the best available in Australia after using it in my own growth trials and introducing it to the hobby. I also supply both brands in Australia, so I had no reason to promote one at the expense of the other.

However, the volume and consistency of feedback from breeders and experienced hobbyists became impossible to ignore. Combined with my own examination of the formulations and my background in evaluating fish food, that feedback changed my position. Today, my preferred food is Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food.

That does not make DRP a poor product. DRP 1 through DRP 5 have served many aquarists well for growing fry and maintaining adult fish. The difference is that Dr. Bassleer offers a much broader and more technically developed feeding system, designed not only for growth but also for digestion, condition, colour, resilience, recovery and the needs of different fish and life stages.

Growth is important—but healthy growth matters more

Fast growth can be achieved with many high-protein foods, including DRP 1 and 2. Protein percentage alone, however, does not tell the full story. What matters is how digestible the protein is, the quality and balance of fats and essential fatty acids, the level and type of carbohydrate, the amount of indigestible material, and how efficiently the fish can use the complete formulation.

Fish species differ greatly in mouth structure, feeding behaviour and digestive anatomy. Excess food, poorly digestible ingredients and an unsuitable nutritional balance can increase waste and may contribute to digestive problems. Bloat is not caused by a single ingredient—it can involve overfeeding, unsuitable food, infection, water quality and species-specific sensitivity—but a highly digestible diet and correct feeding quantity reduce avoidable nutritional stress.

On the product labels and analyses I have compared, Bassleer formulas generally present a high-protein, lower-fibre and lower estimated-carbohydrate profile than the corresponding DRP foods. Exact figures vary by product, so individual formulas should always be compared rather than treating either range as nutritionally identical throughout.

What makes Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food different?

  • High-quality, highly digestible nutrition. The manufacturer describes fresh wild Scandinavian fish and other marine ingredients as important protein and fat sources, including essential amino acids and Omega-3 fatty acids. Better digestibility means more of the food can be used by the fish and less is excreted as waste.

  • Probiotic and prebiotic support. The granulated foods contain the probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici, while the range also uses prebiotic ingredients such as yeast-derived beta-glucans. Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms; prebiotics support beneficial microbial activity in the gut. Together, they are intended to support digestive balance, feed utilisation and natural resistance.

  • A specialised range rather than three basic DRP size groups. Regular, Garlic, Açaí and Chlorella can form a strong core rotation, while Baby + Nano supports larvae, juveniles and nano fish. Additional formulas—such as Forte, Aloe, Herbal, Green, GSE/Moringa, Matrine, Lapacho and Pumpkin—are designed for particular feeding goals or periods of stress and recovery.

  • Pellet sizes and feeding behaviour. Granules are available in sizes suited to very small fry through to large fish. Smaller granules sink slowly, helping surface, mid-water and bottom-feeding fish access food, while the particles remain stable in water for slow feeders rather than immediately disintegrating.

  • Palatability and efficiency. Marine ingredients and carefully designed granules improve acceptance, including among delicate or reluctant feeders. Because the food is nutrient-dense, a smaller quantity may be required than with less concentrated foods—provided it is fed correctly and not overused.

  • Cleaner water and less visible waste. Efficient digestion and water-stable granules can reduce uneaten fragments and faecal waste. This does not replace filtration or water changes, but it can reduce the avoidable organic load created by feeding.

  • No artificial colourants. Colour development is supported through nutrition and naturally derived ingredients rather than artificial colouring agents, according to the manufacturer’s product information.

  • Freshwater, marine and shrimp options. The range caters for tropical and cold-water freshwater fish, marine ornamental fish and ornamental shrimp, with formats and variants suited to different sizes and feeding needs.

What hobbyists and breeders have reported

The following results are practical observations reported to me by clients after changing to Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food. They are valuable real-world feedback, although they should be understood as testimonials rather than controlled scientific trials:

  • Stronger natural colour. Users commonly report a noticeable improvement in colour intensity and overall presentation.

  • More active, alert fish. Fish are described as livelier, more responsive and more willing to display normal character and feeding behaviour.

  • Balanced body condition. Breeders have reported fish developing good shape and condition rather than simply becoming heavy or growing rapidly.

  • Excellent fry performance. Dr. Bassleer Baby + Nano has produced very strong growth results with fry and small juveniles.

  • Less waste. A Discus breeder using glass aquariums reported a clear reduction in visible waste after changing food—consistent with improved digestibility and more efficient feeding.

  • Reduced feeding-time aggression in some groups. Some breeders have observed calmer feeding behaviour. Better satiety and wider distribution of slow-sinking granules may help, but aggression is also influenced by species, breeding condition, territory, stocking density and tank design; food alone cannot control it.

  • Improved digestive tolerance in a reported L600 trial. One breeder reported no bloat in L600 Leopard Pleco juveniles on Bassleer food after previously experiencing bloat while using DRP 5. This is a useful observation, but it should not be treated as proof that a particular food causes or prevents every case of bloat.

Why Chlorella deserves special mention

Chlorella is one of the standout formulas in the range. It contains Chlorella algae and is promoted for digestibility, regeneration and water quality. It has produced particularly impressive practical results with Zebra Plecos and other Hypancistrus species, where balanced algal nutrition can form a useful part of a varied diet.

A frequently cited laboratory observation attributed to Professor Leandro M. Sousa reported that Zebra Plecos fed a specialised Chlorella-based diet, including Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food Chlorella, reached sexual maturity in approximately 1 to 1.5 years. 

Functional foods can support recovery—but they are not medicines

One of the major advantages of the Bassleer range is the availability of functional formulas for defined situations. Garlic is particularly useful where appetite is poor; Forte is positioned as a periodic fitness and immune-support feed; Chlorella supports condition and regeneration; and other plant-based variants are recommended by the manufacturer during particular disease-management programs.

Dr. Gerald Bassleer also provides educational videos and guidance explaining which foods may be used to support fish during stress, disease treatment and recovery. This is a genuine benefit of the range. However, supportive nutrition does not diagnose disease or replace correct treatment, water-quality management, quarantine or veterinary advice where required.

My professional conclusion

My position has changed because the evidence available to me changed. DRP Fish Food remains a good product and has earned its place through years of successful use. Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food, however, now offers benefits that DRP does not match as a complete range: more specialised formulas, probiotic and prebiotic support, post-production functional coatings, excellent pellet design, high nutrient density, strong digestibility, broad species coverage and extensive educational guidance from a fish pathobiologist.

The strongest proof for any aquarist is still careful observation. Compare growth, body shape, colour, appetite, activity, waste production, water quality and long-term health—not merely how quickly a fish gains size. Feed correctly, keep every other husbandry factor as consistent as possible, and assess the result over time.

Based on my own experience, the formulation information I have reviewed and the consistent feedback of breeders and hobbyists, Dr. Bassleer Biofish Food is now my first choice. I consider it the more complete and superior option for aquarists who want to invest in the long-term quality and condition of their fish.
